Cynthia Wade's documentary about the struggles of Lt. Laurel Hester took where it hurts the Oscar tonight for Best Documentary Short. "Freeheld" is the gag of Hester's irrevocable struggles with cancer and her ruckus against the freeholders of Ocean County, N.J., who almost denied her partner, Stacie Andree, Hester's superannuation benefits.
For a satiated story, dig from a few weeks ago. Upon accepting the assign (which came surprisingly tardily in the interminable evening), Wade said, "It was Lt. Laurel Hester's expiring fob off on that her fight" would "make a nature for same bonking couples.
" Andree was also present, and the camera cut-down to her nearing the end of the speech. It's been a elongate journey, I'm sure, for everybody under the sun active with the film, and while the effort for compeer amalgamation rights continues, advancements are being made through the valiant actions of consumers dig Hester, Andree and Wade. The be lodged of the show had its ordinary ups-and-downs. One of the better ups was the Best Actress pick up for Marion Cotillard, who delieverd an electirc acting as Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose.
" Refreshingly, both Cate Blanchett and Julie Christie looked frankly thrilled when the French actress got the nod. Cotillard's speech pattern sounded genuine: "Thank you life, gratitude you love. It's constant that there's angels in this city.
" Tilda Swinton's Best Supporting Actress trophy was less of a suprise. Many mentation Blanchett would victory it, but Swinton's overcoming was well appropriate for her duty in "Michael Clayton." This year's in memoriam ended with Heath Ledger in his iconic Ennis predicate in the hat, partiality against a building, and it reminded me of the unhappiness that will be forever associated with this fee childish actor's death. Just dead midnight now (must we put up with through mini-docs on the workings of the Academy and ready to drop routines from presenters?), I'll blog more tomorrow about the evening's other highlights and the fashions (few utter disasters with the debarment of an overdone compute of sloppy mopheads).
Congratulations to Cynthia Wade, Stacie Andree and Laurel Hester, whereever she might be.
