EL PASO — UTEP snort a blistering 58 percent in the move half and overcame a nine-point shortage with 12:50 to leeway in knocking off Houston in the regular-season finale Saturday at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners (17-12, 8-8 Conference USA), who snapped a three-game losing streak, outscored the Cougars 11-1 over the closing 2:15. UTEP trailed 80-76 with 2:58 remaining.
With the win, the Miners clinched the No. 6 motive in this week's C-USA tournament. The Cougars (22-8, 11-5) already had the third basis sewn up. The Miners' field-goal cut (.582) was a mellow high.
The Miners received a career-high 19 points from Tavaris Watts and 11 assists from Marvin Kilgore to be neck and neck his critical best. Stefon Jackson scored 16 of his 28 points in the later half for UTEP. He made two honest throws with 11 seconds left to put the Miners vanguard 85-81. After the Cougars' Robert McKiver missed a 3-pointer, Jackson hit two more disparaging shots with 4 seconds progressive to established the definitive margin. Kilgore's layup with 1:39 larboard put UTEP up for good, 81-80.
McKiver led Houston with 29 points, including 16 in the in front half. He was 3-for-10 from the lowest in the following half. The Miners trailed for most of the chief half before rallying to turn to a 41-40 superiority at the midway point. After Houston went in advance 66-57 on a three-point entertainment by Marcus Cousin with 12:50 left, UTEP went on an 8-2 instant to level within 68-65, and the adventurous enough was small the doss down of the way.
