The Indio Teen Center - the head conurbation celerity to be built in about 36 years - won't be fully useful for teens until Thursday. Its finishing will be celebrated, however, at today's 2 p.m. event. "This is the best teen center in America," said City Manager Glenn Southard. "I've seen a few.
" The 12,500-square-foot building, with its jutting steel, angled motif and vivid colors, could waste for a big fragment of art. "It's synchronous and fun," said Andrea Cohen Gehring, a helpmate with WWCOT, the architect stationary that designed the building. Indio, the valley's oldest diocese and one of the fastest-growing, has a colossal teen population. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 35.3 percent of the city's people was younger than 18.

Everything about the teen center - from the object to programming - was built with input from teens, said Scott Trujillo, a kind-hearted services governor that oversees pubescence programming for the city. "It's a pure one-stop peach on (for teens)," he said. For the techies and gamers there's a computer lab, recording studio, bold margin and media office with giant flat-panel televisions for movies and video prey systems. For others who itch for more enrichment opportunities, there will be cooking classes, guitar lessons, and shoot and expertise discussions.
"Everything you can surmise a teen would want to do is in here," Gehring said. The burgh knackered about $7 million on the "green" building, which runs on solar forcefulness and was built with zing capability in mind. Southard said he had charming inebriated expectations and is more than satisfied with the results. "This is exceptional," he said.
